I don’t know about you, but I never had problems with my skin in my teens.
Despite my love of inhaling a Whitaker’s Peanut Slab from the school tuckshop on a semi-regular basis – hello sugar hit, lovely to meet you – and having a non-existent skin care routine, my skin was crystal clear.
And then I turned 40.
Hello hormonal, probably also stress related cystic breakouts on my chin. You are right up there with kale, Trump and full priced anything – disappointing.
4 EASY WAYS TO TREAT CHIN AND JAWLINE BREAKOUTS
I’ve battled chin and jawline breakouts for the past 3 years now and so far it’s been a losing battle.
I was even on doxycycline for a while, which did clear things up. However there’s only so long you can take antibiotics for and eventually the breakouts decided to make a comeback.
A couple of weeks ago I was having a bit of a whinge to a beauty therapist about the breakout situation that was brewing on my chin. She was extremely helpful and offered me 4 easy ways to treat chin and jawline breakouts.
Because sharing is caring and the adult acne struggle is real, I thought you might like to know those tips too.
1. Clean your make up brushes regularly
I aim to do this weekly but in reality I probably do it once a month.
When it comes to cleaning make up brushes, most people will tell you to just use soap and water. Some people use shampoo while I prefer to use a small amount of my cleanser to wash my brushes. Dry them in the sun if possible as this will eliminate any further bacteria that might be lurking in the brush hair.
A while ago, while innocently trying to purchase my favourite primer, I was completely sucked into buying a spray that promised to magically clean my brushes without the use of soap and water.
I handed over the $40 for this magic bottle of brush cleaning goodness and raced home to use it*. It was then that I looked at the label to see what was in it – Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol. So I’d basically paid for a bottle of Isocol, which costs less than 10 bucks from the chemist.
Don’t be like me and get sucked into over priced nonsense. Stick to simple, no fuss, old school methods and you’ll have clean make up brushes in no time.
* to use brush cleaning products or Isocol, spray the product onto a tissue. Swipe brush over the sprayed area until clean.
2. Clean your phone everyday
A quick wipe down with a clean cloth is all that’s required. You’ll get bonus points for also spraying the clean cloth with rubbing alcohol or your cleaning product of choice.
This will ensure any makeup, grime from fingerprints etc won’t transfer onto your face – assuming of course that you use for phone for actual phone calls!
3. Don’t exfoliate the area while it’s inflamed
That will make the situation worse. Stick to a simple routine of a gentle cleanse, tone and moisturise.
4. Apply a small amount of this to the breakout area at night:
Ella Bache Creme Intex No. 2, $51 – pricey but the smallest amount is required so one tube should last a while.
When I was recommended this product I was sceptical. I mean I was getting my eyebrows waxed at the time and this felt like a complete up sell.
But I listened to the advice I was being given – apply a small amount to the area at night after cleansing. Don’t put any other product over the top of it. It will clear up those angry, painful cystic breakouts in no time – and I was sold!
And guess what? The lovely eye brow waxer lady was right. It HAS cleared up those angry, painful cystic breakouts on my chin in no time.
Actually it took about a week, but after the first 24 hours my chin was already looking better. The redness had subsided and the area wasn’t painful.
