Primer is one of those makeup products you either can’t live without or you’ve never heard of.
I fall into the first category, mainly because I’m a bit of a product junkie and love to give all things beauty related a go.
I’ve been using a primer as part of my daily makeup routine for the best part of 10 years now and today I thought I’d share 5 of my favourites with you.
What is a primer?
A primer is a cream that’s applied after moisturiser and before foundation/BB cream. It smooths out the skin, gives it an extra boost of hydration and helps makeup last longer.
There are all sorts of primers available on the market, promising to do everything from illuminate your skin to hide fine lines.
I’ve tried some of those and to be honest I’ve found the illuminating primers to be nothing but a shimmery cream that made my face look like a disco ball #thanksbutnothanks
My tip? Stick to a basic primer that promises to do what a primer should do – create a perfect canvas so your foundation glides on evenly and stays there.
5 primers for flawless skin
1. Benefit Cosmetics That Girl $53 Ok, so this primer probably breaks my rule of sticking to a basic as That Girl by Benefit Cosmetics does promise to brighten your skin. However this silky pink primer is the only one I’ve come across that has non-disco ball light-reflecting pigments.
Tip: Apply it to your skin or mix with your favourite foundation for a more radiant complexion.
2. Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer $24.95 This award-winning, lightweight primer promises to smooth and soften skin to create the perfect canvas. I can confirm that it does just that. This bottle of magic is on high primer rotation in my beauty box and at $24.95 it’s a great price.
Tip: Revlon products are often on sale at your local chemist.
3. Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer $59 This was the first primer I ever purchased and I continue to use it today. (Yes, I alternate between Revlon and Napoleon depending on how my skin is feeling.) Loaded with skin soothers like Vitamin E and chamomile, this restorative makeup base will keep your skin happy and hydrated while allowing your foundation to glide on smoothly.
Tip: Let you primer sink right in before applying foundation.
4. Benefit Cosmetics Stay Don’t Stray $45 This clever little tube of goodness is a primer for your eyelids.
Tip: Simply apply three dots of primer to your eye area, blend using your fingertips and apply your eyeshadow. Its nourishing formula helps reduce pesky creasing and retains the vibrancy of your eyeshadow.
5. Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener $78 This skin-quenching primer prepares the skin so makeup goes on easier and lasts longer. At $78 it’s not cheap but it’s a decent size and little goes a long way.
Tip: Not sure which primer is the one for you? Ask for product samples and try them at home before you purchase.
