Over the years I’ve had my share of hair disasters.
Let’s not discuss the time my brown locks were accidentally transformed into a stunning shade of patchy plum. Or the time my hair was orange.
No, we won’t discuss those fairly significant hair disasters.
Or maybe we will, during our next Friday Night Live chat on Facebook. If nothing else, they make for VERY funny stories.
Fast forward a few years and foils/highlights with a creamy blonde toner is my current blonde hair situation.
It’s reasonably low maintenance and keeping it healthy isn’t too tricky. If you’ve got blonde hair or you’re thinking about going lighter, here are my top tips for caring for your hair.
7 easy ways to take care of your blonde hair
1. choose a shampoo and conditioner that’s right for your hair
There are so many different options when it comes to choosing a shampoo and conditioner.
I have very fine hair, so my shampoo and conditioner of choice is Nioxin. It can be pricey but I save a few bucks by buying it online here.
You might prefer one specifically for maintaining and protecting your colour. Or if you use a straightener every day, you might like to look for something that offers heat protection.
Worried about your blonde hair turning brassy? Purple shampoos and/or conditioners are great for keeping the brass away.
Tip: I shampoo and condition my hair every second day using Nioxin. One wash a week is replaced with a purple shampoo and conditioner to keep it looking brass-free.
2. keep your hair hydrated
Blonde hair needs regular nourishment.
A weekly leave-in conditioner at home and treatment when you’re at the hairdresser will help replenish any lost moisture.
Tip: I like the easiest option possible when it comes to at-home treatments/leave-in conditioners. Leaving something in my hair for 10 minutes and then washing out doesn’t work for me. Lately I’ve been using this Redken All Soft Mega Mask. I apply it once a week, leave it in overnight and wash out the next morning. Too easy!
3. use a hair towel to dry your hair
Be kind to your blonde locks and dry them with a waffle weave hair towel.
Made from a super absorbent material woven from ultra-fine microfibres, a waffle weave towel will dry your hair quickly and easily. This means you won’t need to rub your hair dry, which means fewer split ends and less frizz. Hooray for that.

Tip: Curly hair requires plenty of moisture to keep the curls frizz free. If your hair towel has left your hair too dry, simply brush/comb, wet your hands and run them through your hair until the curls bounce back.
4. protect your hair from heat
I let my hair dry naturally – find all the details here – but a heat protectant is a must if blow drying or straightening is a regular part of your hair routine.
Like other hair products, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a heat protectant.
Tip: Your hairdresser is the best person to talk to as they’ll be able to tell you what’s right for your particular hair type.
5. sleep on a silk pillowcase
Sleeping on a silk pillow case sounds so luxurious, doesn’t it?
And luxe it is, but it’s also extremely beneficial to your hair.
There are all sorts of claims as to what sleeping on a silk pillowcase can do for your hair.
From helping to reduce tangles, frizz and split ends to prolonging straightening treatments and blow dries, sleeping on a silk pillowcase could mean goodbye bad hair days, hello gorgeous locks!
Tip: Worried about a silk pillowcase sliding all over the place while you try to sleep? One with an anti-slip cotton back like the one I have – pictured above – is the perfect solution.

6. get regular trims
Breakage or split ends can be an issue for those of us who lighten our hair. Getting regular trims will help keep your hair in good condition.
Tip: I have my hair trimmed when I have my highlights freshened up every 6-8 weeks. Most salons will offer this as a package, which saves a few dollars along the way.
7. wear a hat
We know that the sun can do all sorts of nasty things to our skin, however prolonged exposure to the sun, UVA and UVB rays can also damage our hair.
Discolouration, dryness and split ends are just some of the damage the sun can do.
Wearing a hat will help protect your hair and keep the colour looking fresh and fabulous.
Tip: If you’re exercising outside, look for a hat that’s made from breathable fabric. It will keep your head lovely and cool.
A full brim hat is a great option for a day at the beach and if you struggle to find hats that fit your head, check out the mens section of your local Kmart or Target. There will be a suitable style that will fit your head waiting for you. I promise!
