Earlier this week school went back after eight long, borderline torturous fabulous and fun-filled weeks of school holidays.
After I’d introduced myself to the teachers I sprinted to the car like an olympic athlete walked at a fairly brisk pace to my car, with what I’m certain was an odd look on my face that probably said, ‘Holy crap, is this really happening? Am I actually getting a day to myself after eight long weeks? Best get to the car quick sticks before someone taps me on the shoulder and tells me this is all a big joke and please could I report to the office and take my kids back home’ to anyone who walked past me.
Then again, the only people walking past me were other mums and they seemed to have the same look on their face too. So I’m fairly sure we were all part of the ‘I love my kids, really I do, but how good is today?!’ club at that particular moment!
I got in my car, drove to one of my favourite spots for a coffee ALL ON MY OWN and then I headed to, you guessed it, the shops.
Now I know you probably won’t believe me when I tell you this, but I actually had to get a couple of school related things for the kids, so it wasn’t really a shopping trip I was looking forward to.
I mean, girls knee-length shorts and a boys rashie (swim shirt) aren’t exactly exciting purchases, and to be honest I was a bit annoyed that I had to spend my first day of freedom shopping for more school supplies!
I went to a couple of shops and couldn’t find knee-length shorts anywhere. Couldn’t find a rashie either, so things were starting to get tense.
Time was ticking and I was starting to worry that after eight weeks of basically being a prisoner in my own home, surrounded by nothing but stray Nerf bullets, wet pool towels and sliding doors that everyone can open but never shut them (seriously, what is with that?! Please tell me it happens at your place too!) I might have done the unthinkable and lost my shopping mojo!
But then I headed to Big W and that’s when my day improved significantly.
I found the knee-length shorts AND the rashie in no time at all #crisisaverted and then stumbled across some gorgeous blue and white homewares that made their way into my trolley.
Aren’t they lovely?! And all so cheap. The ‘k’ mug was the cheapest item at $2.50 and the cushion was the most expensive at $15. Everything else was around the $8 mark #bargain
I’ve got a bit of a thing for blue and white at the moment and have recently added this table to the niches that annoy me at the top of the stairs.
Those niches annoy me because they’re an odd shape and the wall itself isn’t centred with the stairs, so getting a decent photo is really tricky #massivefirstworldproblem
Anyway, just around the corner from that little pocket of our home is this IKEA unit, which is where I think I’m going to add most of the blue and white goodies I picked up from Big W.
Those black storage boxes on the bottom are going to be replaced with pale cane/wicker ones to give it a more coastal vibe. And see that empty hole in the middle and the half empty space beside it? That’s where I need more of those white photo albums to go. I purchased them from Kmart ages ago and when I went back there earlier this week, there weren’t any left on the shelves.
So I’m not sure what I’m going to do about that because as you know, balance and symmetry are my thing!

FYI: In 2014 IKEA replaced the EXPEDIT storage unit (as pictured above and in all previous posts) with the KALLAX storage unit. It now features rounded corners and a more durable surface but still fits all existing baskets and storage containers)
But…I did find these gorgeous pastel goodies sitting on the shelves while I was trying to find more white photo albums at Kmart.
Sophie’s claimed the faux pot plant, soap dispenser and tooth-brush holder for her bathroom, while I’m going to use the set of three metal trays ($7) in the guest bedroom. I also purchased a new quilt cover for that room, so I’m thinking maybe next week you might like to come back for a bit of a room reveal? What do you think?
Have your kids gone back to school? Have you found any bargains at Big W or Kmart? Wondering what to do about photo albums that are no longer in stock or is that just me?!
