It’s no secret that I love to celebrate birthdays in our family. I also love to bake, so birthdays are always a great excuse to whip up a decadent cake and celebrate with family and friends!
On Saturday it was Scott’s birthday. At the moment I’m lucky enough to be borrowing an Olympus OM-D E-M10 camera as part of the Kidspot Voices of 2014 #myfamilylens challenge, so let’s have a look at how the celebration was captured through the lens of the camera.
If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you’ll know that Scott has a slight addiction to all things sugar, so naturally I made him the sweetest, sugary cake I could think of!
This photo was taken using my iPhone as a remote control, complete with live view (meaning I could see the image being taken on the screen of my iPhone) via the Olympus Image Share App. SUCH a great feature if, like me, you’re always the one behind the lens and hardly ever in front! I then transferred the photo to my phone using the camera’s inbuilt wi-fi capabilities, before editing it with the inbuilt Light Tone Art Filter.
To create your own Sugar Coma inducing birthday cake at home, simply bake a chocolate cake in a small tin:
purchase 10 of your husbands/partners/childs favourite chocolate bars:
unwrap them and carefully place them around the side of the cake. Tie with a ribbon, fill the middle of the cake with smaller chocolates of your choice and you’re done!
Once the cake was done and dinner prep was complete, Scott stoked the fire pit and enjoyed a quiet frosty beverage, while I searched the pantry for marshmallows for the kids to toast. Surprisingly, given the amount of sweet treats I had purchased for the cake, there were no marshmallows to be found!
After sunset, the birthday celebrations continued with our friends coming over for dinner. I cooked a roast, which apart from an epic fail in the gravy department (it didn’t reduce and looked more like chicken stock than chicken gravy!) the meal was delicious.
Once dinner was done, it was time to celebrate by singing Happy Birthday and as Sophie put it, “Finally get our hands on that cake!”
This post, My Family Lens: Celebrate, is the second post I’m submitting as part of the Kidspot Voices of 2014 #myfamilylens challenge
Shooting on Auto with the OM-D E-M10
You may have noticed that many of my shots have been taken using Auto. I have tried over the years to get my head around using a camera on manual mode, but to be honest, all the technical talk about f-stops and shutter speeds confuses my non-mathematical brain no end!
I’ve been so impressed with the crisp, clear, bright photos the OM-D E-M10 produces using an auto setting that I really am going to find it difficult to go back to my own camera once the #myfamilylens challenge is over.
I’m also head over heels in love with the all of the amazing inbuilt features the Olympus OM-D E-M10 comes, including inbuilt camera WiFi that enables me to instantly upload my photos to Instagram and Facebook! If you visit either of those social media sites, be sure to do a quick search for the hashtag #myfamilylens and/or #voicesof2014 to see not only the photos I’ve been taking, but also the beautiful images taken by the other bloggers participating in the challenge.
