1. It keeps you fit
Shopping is my cardio and just quietly, it should be yours too. I accidentally wore my Fit Bit to the shops once and after I recovered from the horror of basically wearing active wear in public a day of walking around my local Westfield, I am pleased to say I racked up a whopping 10,000 steps!
Sure there weren’t as many active minutes in there as Michelle Bridges would probably like us all to have, but hey, it’s better than sitting at home on the couch. Plus it’s a lot more fun doing cardio at the mall than on a treadmill, let me tell you!
2. It keeps you toned
Not only will your cardio fitness improve by shopping, but your arms will see dramatic toning improvement after lugging around so many shopping bags!
Now some might say that arm toning via shopping isn’t quite as peaceful as arm toning via yoga but I find a boot full of shopping bags strangely soothing. And I reckon that’s gotta be a much easier way to feel soothed than downward dogging it on a yoga mat for an hour and a half, don’t you?!
3. It’s full of vitamins and minerals
I mean you need to stop for coffee breaks every couple of hours because shopping requires energy and sustenance.
This of course means you’re getting more than your fair share of calcium for the day, which in turn means you won’t be suffering from osteoarthritis anytime soon. Huzzah. Healthy bones FTW!
4. It teaches you responsibility
When you go shopping on a regular basis you might hear the word ‘shopaholic’ get thrown around a bit. Personally I find this term a little bit insulting because let’s be honest, when you go shopping you’re helping the economy.
You’re not a shopaholic, you’re a responsible citizen doing your bit to keep the nation’s economy ticking over quite nicely, thank you very much!
I mean how else is old Silver Fox Malcolm and his mates down in Canberra meant to come up with a surplus in the budget if you’re not whipping out your credit card on a semi-regular basis?
5. It’s great for your social life
The options are endless for your social life while shopping. You can have a bit of ‘me time’ and shop on your own or meet some girlfriends and shop together. You can bump into old friends while shopping or organise a Mother’s Group and take over an entire coffee shop with your babies and prams.
You can meet strangers from the internet while shopping and not get kidnapped (always a bonus!), share your shopping finds on social media (who doesn’t love to know what bargains are around?!) and if all else fails, you can even become friends with the lovely staff who work at several of the shops at the mall!
That way, when you walk into their store (or section in a department store) you’ll be greeted with a familiar face who knows your name and has a bit of a chat with you before you try on a few things and realise that you might just be smack bang in the middle of your happy place. Or so I’ve heard.
Is shopping your cardio too? Are you a responsible citizen contributing to our economy? What was the last thing you purchased?
