Ok, so Mother’s Day is just around the corner here in Australia and NZ and before we get into this week’s Friday Five, I need to tell you a funny little story involving vanilla scented candles and online shopping….
Several Mother’s Days ago, the kids gave me a vanilla scented candle. Now I absolutely love candles, however I have this thing where I don’t like candles smelling like food. Mostly because I reckon food is for eating, not for smelling. So while Scott knew I loved candles, my absolute dislike for all things vanilla scented wasn’t exactly something that had ever come up in conversation. As a result, when I was presented with a beautifully wrapped Vanilla Scented Candle on Mother’s Day a few years back, I faked enthusiasm and excitement so much that a) I pretty much could’ve given Nicole Kidman a run for her money in the acting stakes and b) I have been given a vanilla scented candle every Mother’s Day since because, “We know how much you love them.”
That Mother’s Day gift giving scenario went on for quite a few years, until I eventually piped up and shared my lack of love towards the poor old vanilla scented candle with Scott and the kids. This revelation has of course resulted in both Scott and the kids thinking it’s all sorts of hilarious to keep giving me those exact type of candles whenever the opportunity arises, as well as pointing them out whenever any of them see one innocently sitting on a gift shop shelf, “Look mum, it’s a vanilla scented candle. Your favourite!”
Now last year, in an effort to avoid the dreaded Mother’s Day Vanilla Scented Candle gift giving situation, I cleverly started forwarding emails and links to Scott that I’d received from various online stores in the lead up to Mother’s Day with the words ‘Thought this might interest you’ in the subject line. Which, I have to say, resulted in some superior gifts been given (and gratefully received) last year. I KNOW. It’s a genius tactic. And one that you should embrace too.
So here we go with this week’s Friday Five: The Mother’s Day Edition, where I share with you some of the links that may or may not be on their way to Scott as we speak. If there’s anything you like the look of, feel free to forward this post onto your own unsuspecting husband/partner. If nothing else he/she will appreciate not having to traipse around the shops looking for a present for you and you’ll sleep easy knowing there won’t be another vanilla scented candle to unwrap on May 11th ๐
ONE:
Odeion Clutch by Oroton, as held by the Duchess of Cambridge during her recent visit to Brisbane.
I mean, really. This gift needs no explanation. It’s currently on sale, reduced from $245 to $120, so that’s a bargain. Oroton is an iconic Aussie brand, so it’s totally patriotic AND Our Kate was carrying her lippie in one during her visit to Brisbane, which, if you take into account the whole six degrees of separation thing, will definitely mean you and her are BFF’s once you get your mitts on one. Husbands, click here to order.
TWO:
Pretty much anything, I repeat anything, from Kikki K’s latest Mother’s Day range.
Although I do already own one of those Sentence A Day books and I’m far too busy drinking wine running around after the kids to write down what I’m thankful for everyday, but I do LOVE to write letters, so I’ll leave that decision in your capable hands. Scott Husbands, click here to order.
THREE:
Peter Alexander Slippers or PJ’s or something from his gift set collection. I’m not fussy.
Although sizing can be a bit tricky, so on second thoughts, maybe a gift voucher would be the best option? Either way, totally up to you. Just keep the receipt and we’ll all have a very Happy Mother’s Day. Husbands, click here to order.
FOUR:
Now this next one is a bit tricky, because it’s going to a bit of forward planning, but I put a call out on the blog’s Facebook Page, asking the readers what they would like for Mother’s Day and pretty much everyone said ‘time to myself/a sleep in’ which was closely followed by ‘not having to worry about cooking for the day.’
There was also a very specific request from my lovely new friend, Babs, who writes a beautiful blog called Patchwork Cactus. We met when I sat next to her on the bus that took us to the Kidspot Voices of 2014 Masterclass a couple of weekends ago and as such will be forever known as my Kidspot Bus Buddy. Anyway, she would like these:
which can be found here. Babs, you’re welcome x
But back to the ‘not having to worry about cooking for the day’ thing. Now is probably an appropriate time to mention to all the dads out there, that this definitely does not mean you’ve been given a free pass to provide Maccas for breakfast, lunch and dinner on May 11. Rather, it’s Mum Code for ‘I’d settle for a borderline edible breakfast and hot coffee in bed, a picnic lunch somewhere (maybe a park or at the beach or even your own backyard) followed by whatever my husband and/or kids are capable of cooking for dinner.’ In my case, that probably means toasted sandwiches, which is perfectly acceptable because it means I haven’t had to worry about cooking for an entire day. I don’t know about you, but my heart rate is instantly lowering at the mere thought of that happening.
Also, cake is always a winner, especially one that’s homemade. Husbands, click here for my Chocolate Chip Cake recipe that the whole family will love.
FIVE:
I think I’ll leave Number Five up to you. After all, I’ve given numbers 1 -3 a red hot crack and no doubt Scott’s flat out placing online orders your husband/partner/significant other would like an idea of what you might like. So if you missed out on commenting on the Facebook page yesterday and/or your husband doesn’t follow the Facebook page and therefore won’t see what you’ve requested, now’s your chance. Just leave a comment below, outlining what’s on your wish list for Mother’s Day this year, forward the post onto your other half and BAM! Our work here is done. Seriously. How good are we?!
