Last night at the dinner table the kids reminded me that they both needed costumes for their Book Week parade thing that was happening at school this Friday.
Now before we go any further, I probably should point out that I’ve been ‘celebrating’ Book Week since 1995, where my go-to costume as a kindy teacher was Cinderella (in her cleaning gear, not her full ball gown get up). So that’s 20 years of faffing about with costumes and to be honest, I’m a bit over it!
I know this probably comes as a complete surprise to you all, given that I don’t mind getting my Tonia Todman on from time to time, but I am not a sewer. I wouldn’t even have a clue how to thread a machine, let alone whip up a costume of any description on one, so that makes things a bit tricky.
I’m also VERY tight when it comes to costumes and refuse to fork over wads of cash for cheap, slippery fabric that has been whipped up into a costume that will be worn once and then tossed into the dress up box, never to be seen again!
I must admit it was really easy when the kids were little and I could easily sway them into being a pirate (“Tough Boris is an awesome book! You’ll look so good as a pirate!”) or a ballerina (“Angelina Ballerina is the perfect book for Book Week! And you’re doing ballet, so you’re just like her….only without the tail and the mousey features”) because who doesn’t have a pirate patch and a pink tutu lying around the house when their kids are in prep?
And honestly, by now, I thought my Book Week days would be over. But no. The costume torture continues.
This week I’ve got the enjoyable task of knocking up a sneezy dwarf costume and some other character that I’ve never heard of, all while battling some sort of weird flu thing that has completely knocked me for six. Good times!
But on the bright side, the kids love it and Book Week definitely encourages them to read more, so that’s a good thing.
I guess this parenting gig can’t just be watching Netflix school runs and online shopping homework supervision, can it? There’s got to be something that challenges us, otherwise we’ve got nothing to blog whinge about, right?!
What did your children dress up as for Book Week? Have you been to a fancy dress party lately? Watched anything good on Netflix?
