So last week my parents came home from a solid 6 weeks in Hawaii. And because my dad just loves to share his travel experiences with those of us stuck at home, each day he would email me a photo of the Hawaiian sunset. I know. So thoughtful. And not at all irritating.
Those daily sunset photos became a bit of a running joke between Dad and I and I told him they were so fabulous that I was thinking about getting them made into a poster to hang in the entrance of our house. Because wouldn’t that be a lovely talking point when visitors called in? I mean, who doesn’t love a casual chat about other people’s holidays and their repetitive photo taking action?
But then it hit me. Father’s Day!
Yes, I totally turned those sunset photos into various useless household items. Just for Dad. Because I’m thoughtful like that.
So yesterday, Dad unwrapped an apron, coasters, magnet, stubbie cooler, deck of cards, puzzle and mouse pad. All featuring the delightful Hawaiian sunset, which let me tell you, never gets old.
There was also a rather large block mounted photo of my parents & their friends, looking what can only be described as Hawaiian Orange as well as a mug that’s black when you first see it, but once hot water is added? HUZZAH, the sunset gradually appears before your very eyes. iiiii know. I really did think of everything and completely outdid myself with the Father’s Day Gift Giving this year.
But wait, there’s more.
Once all the gifts were unwrapped, Dad insisted on getting a photo with each individual item. I dutifully took the photos and when finished, I asked Dad why he needed so many photos of himself holding each item.
His answer? “So I can send you one via text message each day of course. How great is that? I can re-create the daily Hawaiian sunsets all over again for you.”
Well played Pops. Well Played.
Do your parents like to escape the winter every year and send you photos of the sunset every day for 6 solid weeks? Or is that just me? Either way, I’d love to know!
