So about a month ago I wrote this post letting you know that I was facing a couple of health issues.
I haven’t said much since, partly because, believe it or not, I’m quite a private person when it comes to personal matters. But mainly because I’ve been waiting patiently for the specialists to fire off paperwork to each other and book in follow up appointments for me.
Unfortunately there was a bit of a delay in that process due to both the ophthalmologist and Neurologist office staff completely forgetting to send paperwork to each other before they all packed up and went away on holidays for 2 weeks. Honestly, if there’s one thing I’ve learnt during all of this it’s that if you need anything done properly, you’re always best to do it yourself!
And do it myself I did. So here’s a quick health update for you:
I ditched the useless and completely unorganised Neuro’s office and found myself a new one. Only to be told that he is completely booked out until September but he’d have a look at my file and get back in touch with me should an appointment crop up earlier.
Thankfully he took one look at my files and told me to come in ASAP, which was both a relief and a little bit alarming all rolled into one.
I saw him on Friday and he was so thorough, so understanding and swore several times, in the most polite way, during the consult – “My dear, the stories you have heard about lumbar punctures are a load of bullshit and if there’s one thing I don’t do, it’s bullshit” – so finding him was obviously meant to be!
So the lovely sweary neuro bloke informed me that I don’t have a brain tumour or a blood clot or MS – cue a huge sigh of relief from me!
What I do have is too much fluid around my brain which is pressing on both my optic serves and pituitary gland. It’s not a life threatening thing to have, but left untreated I will lose my sight completely and my pituitary gland will stop functioning, which as you can imagine is a less than ideal situation.
On Wednesday I’m going in for a lumbar puncture to relieve some of the pressure and to make sure there’s no infection going on (good times!) Then it’s off to an Endocrinologist to sort out my pituitary gland and thyroid issues.
Personally I’m hoping to walk out of that appointment 15cm taller and 20 kilos lighter, but the sweary neuro bloke said I might be aiming a little too high with that goal!
There’s also some fairly extensive blood work to be done and a sleep test thrown in for good measure, but give it a few months and I should be fine. HOORAY!
