Now that I’ve opened an online shop selling prints I’ve designed, I can officially say I work from home. Hooray!
Up until a couple of weeks ago, my home office was pretty much a dumping ground for all the things that had nowhere to go. You’d quite often hear me tell the kids, “Just dump it in my study” and after a while my study/home office became a bit of a mess.
As a result, I didn’t have adequate work space to fill orders when they come in and working around piles of clothes that no longer fit the kids or toys that they no longer play with was a less than ideal working situation!
So, at the dinner table a few weeks back I made the very important announcement that Mum’s study was now a Home Office and under no circumstances was anything to be left in there that wasn’t work related. I then put in some serious hours on Pinterest, where I got lots of home office ideas. If you’d like some of those ideas for yourself, feel free to follow my Pinterest board called ‘Study Nook’. Don’t be fooled by the board name, there are tons of home office ideas there!
Once I had a few ideas up my sleeve, I took myself off to IKEA and Super Amart where I purchased a few things for Scott to put together for my new home office. Here’s how all of those home office ideas came together:
First up, let’s discuss the desk situation. I already had a white desk I’d purchased from Super Amart a couple of years ago (It’s from their ICE range, in case you’re wondering) and decided I needed another one to store my printer one and create a bit more work space. Fortunately they were still in stock (and on sale, winning!) so I now have a lovely long work area that runs almost the length of the room.
I wanted to display some of the prints from The Shop but was reluctant to hang them in frames because I like to change things around so often! I thought about attaching clipboards to the wall, but too much of anything in a small space hurts my brain (am more of a minimalist than I am a clutterist….if that’s even a word?), but then these floating shelves at IKEA caught my eye and I knew that was the perfect solution.
I’ve tried to find the link to the shelves on the IKEA website and after trawling through 35 pages of shelving, with 105 pages to go, I’ve given up. But you’ll find them on the lower level of the IKEA maze, in the section where all the photo frames are. From memory, they’re $14.99 each, but don’t quote me on that!
I bought two shelves and asked Scott to hang them for me side by side, to create one long shelf. He may have had a bit of a whinge about that being a right pain in the butt to do. Something about it being hard to get those shelves level, but to be honest, I wasn’t really listening and if you look at the photo he totally nailed it, so I don’t know what he was going on about in the first place!
I also bought a HEMNES Buffet while I was at IKEA, which only took Scott 3 hours and 72 swear words to put together.
It’s perfect for storing all my envelopes, business cards and note cards that I use when sending out prints to happy customers. I know the top of it looks a bit boring, being pretty much empty, but I need that space for collating prints into the sturdy envelopes and hand writing thank you notes that go with every print sold.
I made the A3 posters, put a few gold glitter wall stickers I picked up from Cotton On Kids for $9.95 and added a gorgeous garland that was sent to me a while ago from the lovely Justine at Confetti and Cake.
I think I’d like to add a bit more colour to the mix somehow. Probably a splash of pink or maybe even some aqua, but for now the monochrome home office is working a treat!
So there we have it. A few home office ideas from me to you. Got anything else you’d like to add?
