Recently blog reader and Facebook follower, Sharon J, asked for some layering tips as she’s off to the UK soon – lucky! Hopefully this post will help.
I don’t know about you but I love the layered look. It’s great for traveling or when the seasons start to change.
But where do you start and perhaps most importantly, how do you layer clothes without adding too much bulk? I mean I’m all for keeping warm but I’m not really a fan of looking like a potato, casually lounging around in thick layers of puff!
How to create a layered look in 5 easy steps
5 steps might seem like a lot, but once you get the hang of it, layering becomes really easy.
I’ve created a guide for you below, highlighting each of the steps and offering clothing suggestions. I’ve kept each piece neutral in colour but that doesn’t mean you have to. Colours and patterns look great layered and yes, print clashing is definitely a thing.
cold weather layering tips
The following guide gives you an idea on how to layer when the weather is cooler.
If you live in or a traveling to a really cold climate – think snow or ridiculously low temperatures – wearing a thermal base layer and a wool mid layer will keep you toasty warm. As will the thickest, longest coat you can find and/or fit into your suitcase. Gloves, scarves and a beanie are also a must.
warm weather layering tips
If, on the other hand, you live somewhere warmer, look for breathable fabrics when layering. Bamboo, cotton and linen are good options. You’ll probably want to skip the mid layer and choose a lightweight kimono, blazer or jacket for your outer layer.
Jeans on the bottom layer can also be swapped for shorts, skirts or lightweight pants.
accessories
Again, your choice of accessories will be based on the climate you’re in. If it’s warm, jewellery and a light scarf and/or hat might be the only accessories you need. If it’s cold, you’ll need all the warm things!
