I don’t know about you but I love being near the water. There’s something so calming about the ocean and bobbing around in a pool, preferably with a cocktail in my hand, is one of my favourite Summer pastimes.
But not so long ago I used to dread actually getting into the water.
That walk from my towel to the water’s edge used to feel like the longest, most uncomfortable walk of my life every single time I reluctantly did it.
So usually I didn’t. Instead, I would sit on my towel or under my beach umbrella, pretending I was happily reading a book when really I was desperate to get into that water.
What stopped me? The usual female hang ups – my size, my shape, my pale skin, my unique ability to trip over at any given moment.
Ok, so that last one might just be me but you can probably relate to a couple of the others.
However being told there was a very real possibility I could lose my sight last year completely changed my life.
We jokingly refer to 2015 as The Year Of The Couch at our place, for that is where I spent most of it. My IIH diagnosis and the medication I had to take to fight it knocked me for six, but while I was on that couch I made a little deal with myself.
I promised that the minute I started feeling better, I would never let life pass me by again. That I would get out there and have fun.
That I would stop the negative self talk and the self-deprecating jokes about the way I looked.
There was going to be more no more beached whale talk from me and there shouldn’t be from you either.
Life is too short to not get in the water, don’t you think? It’s also too short to not rock a gorgeous swimsuit.
You CAN feel good in a swimsuit this Summer. Let me show you how.
How To Feel Good In Your Swimsuit This Summer
Feeling good in a swimsuit has absolutely nothing to do with our size and everything to do with our mindset.
Swimwear can often be a snug fit so don’t worry about the number that’s on the tag. Size up if required and don’t give it another thought.
Instead, consider more important things such as:
- Is the swimsuit comfortable? Some swimsuits are anything but comfortable, especially the super supportive types. If the swimsuit feels tight, you’ll feel anything but good.
- Does it give you support where you need it? Look for an underwire if you have a large bust or padding if you don’t.
- Are there details around the tummy if you feel like you need it? Ruching or panelling works like a charm.

Teamed with Kalokeri Mesh Dress in Black, Size M/L, featuring a flattering v neckline, subtle elasticated ruching along the lower side seam and fine black mesh fabric that stretches.
- Will it suit your water based activities? If you’re an active type, or you like more sun coverage without sacrificing style, a rash vest is the way to go. Look for one that’s fitted, rather than oversized (fitted is flattering, especially when it comes to swimwear) and unzip it slightly for a fun look.

- If lazing poolside is more your thing, why not step the glamour up a notch? A black swimsuit keeps things simple yet sophisticated. Black is also a great colour to wear if you are stepping out your comfort zone and putting on a swimsuit for the first time in a long time. It does hide any lumps and bumps that you think might be there, even though they’re probably not.
- Adding a kimono style cover up to your swimsuit wardrobe will have you feeling confident in no time. Cinch it in at the waist or leave it free flowing. Either way you’ll feel confident enough to order a cocktail before draping the kimono over your chair and walking towards the pool.

- Or perhaps a sarong is more your thing? If you can’t find one you like, simply grab a scarf from your wardrobe and you’ve got yourself an instant swimsuit cover up.
