It’s Sophie’s 12th birthday tomorrow. Having a birthday 5 days before Christmas might seem like less than ideal timing but it’s not. The pre-birthday excitement levels at our place are always high!

Over the years I’ve put a few things in place to ensure Sophie’s birthday doesn’t get overlooked in the lead up to Christmas. If you’ve got a December baby or know someone who has, these ideas might be helpful.
How to make your child’s December birthday special
1. Have an early birthday party
When Sophie was little we had a small birthday party with family and friends on her actual birthday. However once she started kindy/school, I began the tradition of having an early birthday party with her school friends.
We usually have it 3-4 weeks before Sophie’s actual birthday. This avoids any weekend date clashes with Christmas or school commitments during December. It also means Sophie is able to celebrate her birthday with her friends during school term time.

2. Involve the birthday child
As you can probably tell from the photos, I love planning a party. As Sophie has gotten older the themed parties have disappeared, but she’s still very much involved in the planning of them. Asking the birthday child questions such as
- what cake would you like?
- what games would you like to play?
- who would you like to invite?
- where would you like to have it?
helps build the excitement levels. It doesn’t mean they’re going to necessarily get all of those things, but it’s fun for them to be involved and shows them that their birthday is really important to you.

3. Say no to joint presents
Combining birthday and Christmas presents makes it a Birthmas Present.
“Happy Birthmas! Here’s your present!” Sounds a bit odd, right?
If you have someone in your life who is under the age of 102 and their birthday is in December, give them a birthday present not a birthmas present. The birthday person will love you for it.
