Look, I won’t lie. I’ve been on the hunt for a faux fur vest for ages, possibly even years, and up until recently I’ve had absolutely no luck finding one.
My main problem with every faux fur vest that I’ve tried on is that a) it’s been far too bulky for my short frame and b) white ones made me look like a polar bear.
So you can imagine my delight when I ordered one from City Chic recently and when it arrived a few days later I discovered it was the perfect mix of faux fur and thin lightweight fabric. Not a polar bear or bulky looking ball of fluff in sight!
Here are my tips on how to style a faux fur vest:
1. Find a vest that’s the right length for your height. I’m short (164cm) and this vest sits right on the lower part of my hips, so it’s long enough to cover the wobbly bits at the back and sides but not so long that I look like I’m drowning in a sea of faux fur.
2. Let the vest do the talking. Keep the rest of your outfit simple and the vest will be the star of the show. Although I did break that rule a bit but adding a statement necklace and carrying the most gorgeous pink sequin clutch, but all that black needed to be broken up with just a little bit of colour!
3. Don’t go overboard with the thickness. If you’re on the curvy side like I am, a thick faux fur number is only going to make you look bigger. If you’re a skinny little thing, half your luck. You can pretty much wear anything you like, so go hard with the thick vest action and know you will rock it! But curvy girls are best to stick with something a bit more lightweight that hugs to your shape rather than sits on your body like a furry blob.
4. Embrace layers. I wore this outfit in Melbourne on the weekend, where it was fairly cold, so layers were a must. Under the lightweight vest I had on a wool jumper (cosy) and when we left the hotel I threw on my very thick wool coat.

Special thanks to Nicole from The Builder’s Wife who took the photo for me. We were working in less than ideal conditions (harsh lighting, ugly curtains and not a glass of wine in sight) and Nicole did a fabulous job!
