It’s no secret that I’m not the sporty type.
Everyone has their talents and mine most definitely do not appear to be on a sporting field of any kind.
I do however love the Sports Luxe look – think t-shirt, jeans and a comfy pair of sneakers and BAM! you’ve got yourself an outfit.
how to wear sneakers when you’re not actually sporty
There are however a few tricks to making the sneaker with jeans/shorts/dresses/skirts work.
Here, in no particular order, are my top 5 tips.
1. New to the sneaker look? Start with a classic white
If you’re trying the sneaker with jeans look for the first time, think of the sneaker as your new ballet flat.
A simple white sneaker will ease you into the sports luxe look. They’ll go with everything in your wardrobe and eliminate the stress of what to wear them with.

2. Prone to tripping over things? Avoid the chunk factor.
If, like me, you have the unique ability to trip over basically nothing, chunky sneakers are not the best option.
They add a fair bit of weight to your foot which can make tripping over your own feet yet another skill you can add to your resume. Or so I’ve heard.
For me, high tops are out. Sleek, traditional lace ups are in.
3. Need to wear socks? Grab a pair of sneaker socks
Yes, sneaker socks are a thing.
They’re cut extremely low so they can’t be seen when you’re wearing them.
A very important thing to consider, especially when wearing your sneakers with a skirt or dress.
I love these ones from Bonds.
Although, I do have a bit of a thing for fun socks.
So when I’m wearing jeans I’ll wear a longer pair. Who wouldn’t want polka dot or love heart patterned socks peeking out from under their jeans?!

4. Want to mix things up a bit? Look for patterns or metallic accents
Keep the rest of your outfit simple and let your sneakers be the hero piece.
There’s everything from leopard print to blush pink available. If you love them, you’ll wear them.

5. Not sure on what style you like? Go for fashion over function
Remember, you’re not purchasing these sneakers to wear to the gym, or run a few laps of an oval.
You’re purchasing them for comfort, style and fun.
Skip the breathable fabric with the marathon approved laces. Head towards the fashion focused sneaker and you’ll be sports luxe ready in no time!
