How was your weekend? Did the Christmas festivities kick off at your place or was it a quiet one for you?
It was a busy weekend here!
Saturday
Things kicked off with a Team Smith Christmas. I moved the dining room table outside – sorry, that should read, I asked Guns to move the dining room table outside, and then I pottered about with setting the table.
Mason jars and candles from Pottery Barn Brisbane, gold rimmed glasses and dinner plates from Myer (glasses were $2 each in last year’s Boxing Day Sale!), paper straws from Kmart, Christmas crackers from Coles Supermarkets, cutlery from Target Australia, rattan placemats from Alfresco Emporium on the Gold Coast, dining room table from Early Settler Furniture.
Scott/Guns family arrived and the kids had a great time playing with their cousins all day. Remember that? How good was it going to your cousin’s house when you were a kid? I had more cousins than I could count, but one lot had the game Guess Who AND a fish pond at their house so I used to love going there!
We spent the day eating our body weight in ham, having a few laughs and watching the kids opening presents.
The adults stopped doing the gift giving thing years ago, but this year my brother-in-law (yes, Guns has a brother…and a sister too!) surprised me with this:
Isn’t it awesome?! He made it himself with some sort of wood working machine he has (I probably should’ve asked for the correct name/more specific details) and because I’ve already been asked twice on Facebook and Instagram, yes, he’s married. Sorry ladies.
I spent the day wearing a very comfortable outfit that I purchased from Katies.*
Embroidered Off The Shoulder Top in Black, $59.95 | I’m wearing a size 12 (it’s a roomy cut, so I went down a size)
Tie Waist Soft Short in Black, $39.95 | I’m wearing a size 14
I tucked the top into the shorts and BAM! I had a jumpsuit look without the inconvenience of an actual jumpsuit. (If you’ve ever had to make a bathroom break while wearing a jumpsuit, you’ll know what I’m talking about!)
Saturday Night
We had friends over for dinner. And by dinner I mean left overs from Christmas lunch. All was going well until Guns attempted to re-heat the roast spuds and after 25 minutes in the oven they were still cold.
He was all, “Meh, they’re still cold. Dinner will be another 20 minutes or so” while I was all, “they should be well and truly done by now” before having another sip of wine and forgetting about the spuds putting my drink down and checking this intense situation out.
Turns out Guns isn’t quite as familiar with the oven as he perhaps claims to be and was re-heating the spuds on the defrost setting.
So after giving him a quick lesson in the difference between a snowflake and a fan, we were on our way!
him: “Looks more like a propellor to me”
me: “Whatever works. Just use that propellor setting from now on. Not the snowflake. We don’t need to defrost anything in the oven. That’s what the bench and the humidity is for. And no, before we go any further, that is not a cue to make a joke about my hair.”
Not that Guns would ever actually make a joke about my hair. He is a massive fan of 80’s style hair and quite often when the heat hits here in Queensland, I’ll say words to the effect of, “OMG would you look at my hair!” To which he will reply, “I know right? How exactly can you make it bigger?”
Sunday
Sunday was a little bit wonderful.
At 6am on the dot, as arranged the night before (“What time can I wake you up in the morning, Mum?!”) we were woken up by a very excited 11 year old. ELEVEN. Where do the years go?
Having a birthday 5 days before Christmas might suck for some people, but not Sophie. She can’t believe her luck that she gets to have two birthdays every year! (“Really! One with my friends in November and then with my family on my actual birthday. It’s pretty cool.”)
You can catch up on Sophie’s birthday party with her friends in this post: A Lazy Mum’s Guide To Birthday Parties
So yesterday, after spending all day with us on Saturday, Scott’s family kindly rocked up here again with birthday presents in tow. Then my folks arrived, bringing Sophie’s other cousins with them and our friends who were over for dinner on Saturday night called in with a present too.
And that, right there, is how you do a birthday in December.
How was your weekend? Did you get up to anything exciting?
