Last week Sophie and I were lucky enough to have lunch with Chantelle from Fat Mum Slim to learn all things photography related thanks to Rachel from Sesame Ellis and the team from Olympus.
The lunch was held at the very Instagram-able QT hotel on the Gold Coast and after we’d listened to Rachel teach us clever things about taking photos, we were given cameras (OMD-EM10’s for the grown ups and tough cameras for the kids) and encouraged to take lots of photos around the hotel. FUN!
Sophie LOVED having the opportunity to set up her own photos using a frame and toy zebra that came in her goodie bag (thank you Chantelle!) and took nearly 100 photos in just over an hour. Here are a few of them:
One of the points that really resonated with me during Rachel’s talk was letting your kids take photos of you.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ALWAYS behind the camera and hardly ever in front of it. Rachel insisted that we say yes to having our photo taken by our children and in doing so, we’ll get to see ourselves as our children see us.
Sophie loves taking photos and quite often asks if she can borrow my camera and it was really interesting to see how she captured photos of me. It made me realise how our children really do see us (looking up at mum is not the most flattering of angles!) and it’s definitely made me realise I need to get out from behind the camera lens a bit more!
If you’re looking for an activity for the kids to do these school holidays, why not give them a camera and tell them to take some photos? (Don’t forget to include yourself in a few of them!) I promise it’ll be a fun thing to do and you might be surprised at how lovely it is to see the world through your children’s eyes.
We had such a lovely afternoon, chatting to other Mum’s and their children and it was really nice to be able to spend a couple of hours with Sophie doing things that we both love – taking photos, eating delicious food and making new friends.
It was also great to be in the company of so many other people who didn’t think twice when you re-arranged the table slightly to get the perfect shot for Instagram or took a selfie in the hotel lobby while guests walked past wondering why on earth you had name tags on and were carrying small plastic animals!
Thanks so much to Chantelle, Rachel, Olympus and the QT Hotel for a fabulous lunch. We had a wonderful time and learned a lot too!
Do you love taking photos? How do you feel about being in front of the camera?
