Since blogging about having the mehs last week (click here to catch up on that post) a few readers have got in touch with me to ask if I wouldn’t mind sharing the details of the meal plan The Food Nazi has put me on.
I’m always more than happy to share any new information I have with anyone who is happy to listen/read it, but before I do, I need to get all school teacher on you and point out a few things.
Firstly, if you’re new around here, you might want to catch up on what’s been going on with me health wise. This post is a good starting point, this post outlines the diagnosis of IIH and this post highlights the need for some sort of waiting room makeover business to be started in Brisbane ASAP!
Secondly, this meal plan has been designed specifically for me and my needs. It’s based on a series of extensive appointments I’ve had (and I’m continuing to have) with my endocrinologist, which involve everything from a detailed Q&A about my entire medical history to a CT scan of my insides.
So while I’m happy to share the details of what I’m eating every day, keep in mind that if you want/need to make changes to your diet, it’s probably best to have a chat to a professional rather than copy what you see on the screen in front of you.
Finally, I’m on this meal plan in an attempt to fix a medical condition that I will have to battle for the rest of my life. I’m not losing weight to look hot for Summer or strut around in a bikini (god help us all if I ever attempted that!)
I know people mean well when they say things like, “OMG you are looking so good!” (thanks) or “How hot are you going to look this Summer?!” (um, gross) but it really gets under my skin because this is the complete opposite of a vanity thing for me and to be perfectly honest, I was quite happy with the way I looked 7 kilos ago!
Ok, so now that we’ve got the pesky boring bits out of the way, let’s get into what we all came here for…the food!
My Day On A Plate
Breakfast:
One piece of rye toast with a scrape of butter & vegemite. Topped with a slice of cheddar cheese.
Morning Tea:
1 carrot and a small tub of hummus
Lunch:
A salad of some sort. At the moment I’ve been cooking up pieces of salmon at the beginning of the week and keeping them in the fridge.
Each day I take one, crumble it, throw it in a hot fry pan, add 2 cups of spinach, 1 piece of bread torn into pieces and cook until the spinach has wilted. I add a squeeze of lemon juice and the warm salad is done!
I’ve also been adding a chopped tomato and some cucumber to it after it’s cooked to bulk it up a bit.
Afternoon Tea:
A piece of fruit
All the tablets I have to take to battle this IIH thing (at the moment I’m taking 12 tablets a day) make me really tired, so I usually have a coffee in the afternoon, otherwise I’m asleep on the couch by 7pm!
Dinner:
I cook our usual dinners but reduce my carb servings to 1/2 cup of cooked rice/pasta/potato or 1 slice of bread and make sure there’s plenty of vegetables on the plate to keep The Food Nazi happy.
And that’s pretty much it. I get asked a lot of questions about what I’m doing to lose weight, so here’s a quick FAQ for you.
Are you exercising as well?
I am. The endo has and Exercise Physiologist on staff who has devised a series of strengthening exercises for me. I’m not allowed to do any strenuous exercise as that can trigger pressure issues (a quick google of IIH will fill you in on what that all means) so daily walks and a few strengthening exercises are what I’m currently doing.
Does this endo only help sick people or can normal people see him too?
Well first of all, I’m fairly sure I am normal, but thanks for suggesting that somehow I’m not!
Yes, normal people can go and see him. He’s Brisbane based and if you would like his details feel free to email me (teamkandco@live.com)
Are you drinking alcohol?
Not really. To be honest the tablets I take each day do weird things to my appetite and I don’t feel like drinking alcohol or eating anything really sweet, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!
I had one glass of red wine a couple of weekends ago when Scott and I went away for our wedding anniversary and I had two drinks at the Problogger Networking Night last month, (click here if you’d like to read my tips on How Not To Network!) and that’s been the extent of my alcohol intake in the past few months.
I do miss having a glass of bubbles on a Fizzy Friday and I’m not sure how I’ll cope getting through Summer without slamming back the occasional bottle of Corona (the tablets make anything fizzy taste like metal.)
But if I don’t get this IIH thing sorted then I will loose my eye sight and there’s nothing quite like being told “You could go blind” to put the cake and the booze down!
What do you eat when you go out?
If I’m out at the shops, which let’s face it, is somewhat of a regular occurrence, then I order an open sandwich or a salad with dressing on the side. Most places are very accommodating and don’t mind if you ask for slight changes to be made to what’s on their menu.
We don’t go out to dinner much, mostly because I am now a Nanna who can’t stay awake past 8pm, but on the odd occasion that we do, I just pick the healthiest thing on the menu.
How much weight have you lost?
So far I’ve lost 7 kilos. The Sweary Neuro Bloke (click here to meet him) and The Endo are both really pleased with that effort and are both ok with me keeping my weight where it is now.
However I’m a bit of an all or nothing type of personality with a side serve of over achiever/perfectionist thrown in for good measure, so I’ve decided I want to drop another 7 kilos.
That’ll be a loss two dress sizes in total and will bring me in at a healthy size 12. I’m hoping to get there by Christmas, if not before, and all going well it will also mean the IIH will be under control and I can finally get off the revolting tablets I’m currently on.
