So last week I spied a Donna Hay cake mix on special at the supermarket and flung it into my trolley.
On Friday, I posted this pic on Instagram with the cheeky caption “Am baking a cake just like mum used to make…straight out of a box”
Now I’m usually a make from scratch kind of girl, mainly because I find all that measuring, mixing and stirring strangely relaxing. Lately I’ve been too busy to do much baking, so when I saw this delicious looking Donna Hay Cake Mix on sale, I thought, why not?
It was really easy to make, although it did require 8 minutes of butter whipping followed by 3 minutes of beating the mixture, which seemed like a lot.
The cake mix was also required to be baked for almost an hour, but after 40 minutes, mine was done.
I pulled it out of the oven and was slightly disappointed to discover that I hadn’t made a chocolate cake at all. Nope. I’d actually made a chocolate pancake!
Please also note the spectacular chocolate ganache that I not so lovingly spread over the top of the pancake. I mean, if I’m not a food stylist in the making, I don’t know who is!
Now I don’t know about you, but I get the distinct impression that the mix inside the box is not what was used to create that cake on the front of it! And don’t even get me started about the chocolate ganache icing situation.
I think it’s safe to say that A) that was 5 bucks not very well spent and B) I really should stick to my own recipes!
Are you a cake mix or a make from scratch kind of girl/guy? Ever had a cake mix fail? I’d love to know!
