On Wednesday I was sitting at the dining room table, eating my breakfast (a fruit smoothie with a hefty handful of muesli thrown on top) admiring the lovely flowers my very thoughtful friend had given me for my birthday.
I thought they’d make a pretty photo for Instagram, so I got up, moved everything unattractive out of the shot and took the photo.
Nothing is ever what it seems
I love Instagram and see it as an amazing creative outlet – one where you can share photos of anything from beautifully styled photos of your home to a meme that might give someone a laugh. But it is really easy to get caught up in the heavily filtered world of all things social media. You know, where everything and everyone looks perfect.
Nothing is ever what it seems is a favourite phrase of mine.
It’s a good reminder that nobody has the perfect life.
Everybody has crumbs on the kitchen floor at some point during the week. Unless they are Martha Stewart. I’m fairly sure she would never have crumbs on her floor.
For a start, she probably has a Crumb Cleaner on staff which is fair enough. I mean she is VERY busy doing important things like reading this blog!
So when a photo is taken of one #cornerofmyhome there’s a fairly high chance that the rest of it is a bit of a mess!
Of course this phrase isn’t just limited to social media. Real life can be a bit false at times too. I guess the trick to making it all work is to live your own life in the most authentic way you know how.
Keep it real, speak your truth, be yourself.
And know that the next time you see a perfectly styled shot on Instagram, there was probably a chick with humidity riddled frizzy hair taking it who has just cropped several items out of shot because nobody wants to see her half empty smoothie bowl and various other everyday items when they could be looking at enormous flowers and a staircase that magically never shows the dirt and dust in photos, even though there are finger prints ALL OVER THAT GLASS!
