Recently the team at the Harbour Day Spa got in touch with me and asked if Scott would like to come in and try their newly opened Harbour Barber.
Perhaps a haircut and a razor shave? was their suggestion.
Being the caring and considerate wife that I am, I fired back with “How about a full body wax and a facial?”
I also offered to video both treatments, which both The Harbour Barber staff and myself thought would make for one very funny blog post, but sadly for all of us, Scott wasn’t too keen on my suggestions!
He was however quite excited at the thought of getting a hair cut and an old school razor shave in a fancy new barber shop, so last weekend we visited The Harbour Barber. Here’s Scott’s review:
So Kirsten asked if I’d like to sample the services at The Harbour Barber, and then write a review for the blog. I’m sorry did you say free haircut? Yep, I’m all aboard that train.
I rocked up with my media entourage and camera crew (Kirsten and Sophie), ready to be assaulted by the inevitable Chanel and sandalwood cloud that hovers in these places.
When I finally had to exhale and take my first breath, I was pleased to find that the owners of the Day Spa had cleverly developed an invisible air curtain that somehow kept the Chanel and sandalwood cloud at bay on the Harbour Day Spa side, while The Harbour Barber area had smokey hint of bacon. Ok so maybe that was the bbq downstairs raising money for Movember, but still, I felt at home straight away!
Shirl met me and guided me towards one of those old school barber chairs and offered me a drink. Their menu refers to a range of beer available, or you can have tea/coffee. It was 11am and I was driving, so I just had a scotch.
Shirl knows the names of all the fancy haircuts that the hipsters are into (yes the hipsters name their haircuts) and suggested I get a version of something called a Fresh Cut.
I made quite the witty joke about the Fresh Prince of Bel Air (my favourite show back in the day) which surprisingly nobody laughed at.
Kirsten was too busy admiring all the decor, while Shirl was flat out getting her clippers organised, so I can only assume that’s why nobody laughed.
I also got a flat blade shave. First time for me and I have to admit I was a little nervous about having to hold my head back while a steel blade moved across my face, but Shirl did a great job and the warm towels (slightly infused with lemongrass) that were used before and after the shave were a nice touch.
I was then treated to a shampoo, which is something I never get at the other barber’s I used to go to and I have to say, it wasn’t all bad getting a scalp massage for 5 minutes. I basically walked out of The Harbour Barber looking and feeling like a new man.
Up until now, the only time I’ve stepped foot inside a day spa is to buy a gift voucher for Kirsten, but The Habour Barber has got me hooked and I’ll definitely be back. And Kirsten, if you’re reading this, I wouldn’t mind a Harbour Barber gift voucher for Christmas!
Guns out.
The Harbour Barber is located inside The Harbour Day Spa, Cnr Shore St & Masthead Drive, Raby Bay, Cleveland, Brisbane. Scott was a guest of The Harbour Barber and all opinions are his own.
Where does the man in your life get his hair cut? At a barber? And does he try to crack very bad 80’s jokes while he’s there?
