I don’t know about you, but since turning 40 a couple of years ago, my skin has taken a somewhat rapid decline.
I think it’s probably due to a combination of factors such as not wearing sunscreen on my face in my 20’s and 30’s (I KNOW. So naughty), pregnancy related pigmentation that refuses to leave the building and delightful breakouts on my chin, which seem to be hormone related. Good times!
Skin care in your 40s can be a tricky thing to get right. I mean, there’s literally thousands of products out there, each claiming to be able to cure pretty much any skin related problem you might have.
As a self confessed product junkie, my skin care routine was a bit OTT. I’ve spent the past few months getting back to skin care basics (well as basic as it can be for a product lover like me!) and thought I’d share with you the products that are currently on high rotation in my skin care cupboard.
This is everything I use on my skin at the moment. I know it looks like a lot, so let’s break it down into three categories.
Skin care in your 40s: Morning
I was recently invited by Jurlique to have a facial* at their Wintergarden salon here in Brisbane. I’ve used their products in the past but had forgotten how good they made my skin feel and after 90 minutes of pampering I knew Jurlique was the new skin care range for me!
So every morning I use the Moisturising Cleanser and the Daily Exfoliating Cream. I then give my skin a spray of the Rosewater Balancing Mist before applying Dermalogica Pure Light SPF 50 moisturiser and Multivitamin Power Firm Eye Cream.
Skin care in your 40s: Night
At night I use the Moisturising Cleaner and remove any excess eye makeup with Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water (you can read my review of that product right here) Because I don’t like really heavy products on my face at night (they tend to contribute to those pesky hormonal breakouts) I use a small drop of Bio-Oil instead of a night cream. I’ve also just started adding Jurlique’s Superior Retexturising Facial Serum my nightly skin care routine and finish things off with another dollop of eye cream.
Skin care in your 40s: Breakouts
You know I never had pimples in my teens. Not once. Fast forward quite a few years and I’m now the not so proud owner of regular hormonal and stress related breakouts. They only ever occur on my chin, although at the moment I’ve got a rather charming volcano of a pimple brewing on my nose, so that’s new (and not particularly welcome!)
In order to combat those pesky breakouts, once a week I give my skin a really good cleanse using Jurlique’s Moisturising Cleanser and a Clarisonic. I then add a swipe of Differin to my chin area (it’s a prescription only cream) and I’m good to go.
Well ok, if I’m honest good lighting and a Valencia filter when Instagramming also helps!
Got any tips for skin care in your 40s that you’d like to share? Or maybe you have a favourite filter that I need to start using. Do tell!
*The Jurlique facial and products were compliments of Jurlique.
