A couple of night’s ago we wandered downstairs and headed to the fancy resort next door (Halekulani Hotel for those of you who might be interested) for sunset cocktails.
It’s a beautiful outdoor setting with a three piece Hawaiian band playing as you sip on a cocktail of your choice and watch the sun go down over the ocean.
Pam and I had a couple of blended mojitos, Dad and Scott enjoyed a Bud Light or two while the kids had a frozen lemonade (not to be confused with a sprite. In the states, a lemonade is what we Aussies know to be an old fashioned lemon, sugar and water mix and it is delicious after a hot Summer’s day at the beach!)
After cocktail hour was done and dusted we decided to head to a local cheeseburger restaurant for dinner. I of course was taking photos along the way, because, well, that’s what I like to do!
We all sat down at the restaurant and every single one of us pulled out our phones, except Sophie of course, because she’s 10 and doesn’t have one.
She took one look at us, sitting in Hawaii, all looking at our phones and promptly announced, “Right, everyone! Put your phones down! Actually, no, you can all put your phones into a pile in the middle of the table and the first person to touch their phone has to pay the bill for tonight’s meal. I saw that on a You Tube video once and tonight we’re going to do it. Mum, you can take one photo of all the phones in a pile because you’ll probably want to blog about it and then your camera has to go away. Ok?”
So we all put our phones in a pile, I took the one photo I was allowed to take and for the rest of the evening we chatted, laughed, played the one word game (Sophie’s idea), ate delicious hamburgers and made our way back to our apartment. All without looking at our phones once! I KNOW. It was basically like we were in 1987 but I have to say, Sophie’s strict No Phone Policy was actually a very clever move.
Do you have a no phone policy at your place? Have you eaten a burger that was so big you needed to invest in a pair of elastic waisted pants the next day? May or may not be asking for a friend!
