Today we’re taking a walk down memory lane as we re-visit last year’s Father’s Day gift giving antics. Welcome to The One Where I Went Shopping For Sugar – because the only thing we’re quitting around here is kale!
Look, I don’t want to brag but I reckon I outdid myself in the gift giving department yesterday.
You see every year whenever the kids ask Scott what he’d like for Father’s Day he always gives the same answer, “Nothing. Although coke in glass bottles would be nice. Oh and maybe some Mars Bars? And I quite like chocolate sultanas, so maybe some of those?”
Now these requests present the kids and I with a couple of problems.
Firstly, coke in glass bottles is VERY hard to find. I search high and low every year and never have any luck tracking the stuff down.
Mars Bars are easy to find, but they’re not a very exciting Father’s Day present. Especially when you usually fling a week’s worth into your trolley at Coles every Monday!
As for Chocolate Sultanas, well, they’re usually only available at Christmas. And even then the ones Scott likes – Cadbury’s – are exceptionally hard to come by.
Let the sugar shopping begin!
But last week it was like some sort of chocolate-sugar god was shining down on me.
I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw Cadbury Chocolate Sultanas sitting on the shelf at Kmart.
You should’ve seen me. I grabbed the nearest trolley and cleared the shelf of every chocolate covered sultana in 30 seconds flat!
Sure there were only seven containers of them, but still.
I cleared that shelf like it was some sort of Olympic sport and I was going for chocolate covered gold people! Chocolate covered gold!
I was on a bit of a shopping/faux sugar high at this point so I whizzed up and down the aisle to see if there was any coke in glass bottles or bulk supply of Mars Bars on offer.
Sadly there wasn’t. So I left Kmart and headed to Coles to do my groceries.
I wandered through the fruit and veg section, filling my trolley up with all sorts of healthy things.
I made my way down aisle one – biscuits and coffee – turned into aisle two – soft drink, chocolate and chips – yes I know what’s in every aisle of my local Coles.
I think it’s a gift?
Or possibly a sign I need to get out more?
and that’s when I stopped dead in my tracks.
Smack bang in front of me was what I had spent fourteen Father’s Day searching for.
COKE IN GLASS BOTTLES.
I KNOW. I WAS BESIDE MYSELF TOO!
They were in packs of four AND on sale. So naturally I stood there and thought things like
- “How many packs will I buy?”
- “Is it appropriate to clear the entire shelf of coke at Coles?”
- “Where am I going to hide these when I get home?”
- “I guess I should probably make a dentist appointment for Scott while I’m at it?”
before deciding that as this was Scott’s 14th Father’s Day he should have fourteen packs of coke #seemedlogical
So I shoved fourteen packs of coke in my trolley and then, would you believe I turned around to discover that Mars Bars were on sale for $1 each?!
Fourteen Mars Bars in the trolley later and the Father’s Day Gift Giving Trifecta was complete!
Ta-Da!
And how exactly did the kids and I present the Trio Of Sugar to the best dad we know, I hear you ask?
I’m glad you asked, because look at the masterpiece we created:
I was trying to create some sort of Pinterest inspired tree arrangement, but gave up after 37 attempts so went for a tiered look instead.
I’m pleased to report that Guns has declared this to be “the best Father’s Day ever” and if you need him for anything, he’ll be on the couch surrounded by nothing but sugar and the remote control!
