I turn 44 in a few weeks and it’s only been in the last couple of years that I’ve really learned to love my curls.
People seem to be fascinated by curls and from a very early age I’ve had family, friends and strangers all make comments about my hair. Some complimentary, others not so much. Now, as an adult, I’m equipped to handle those comments – yes, it’s my natural curl. No you can not touch it – and they don’t bother me one bit.
However growing up it was a slightly different story. As a young girl, comments about my hair made me feel self-conscious, awkward and uncomfortable. I never knew what to say to rude or hurtful comments, so I said nothing.
It’s amazing how a throw away comment from someone you know or a complete stranger can shape your own thoughts about yourself, isn’t it?
Fast forward to having a daughter with curly hair, and I make sure she’s told on a regular basis how gorgeous her curly hair is. Because I want her to grow up loving herself silly. Not in an “I’m better than you” kind of way, but in a “I can do anything” kind of way.
I’m also very careful about how and when I make comments about the appearance of others. Judging other people based on what they look like is cruel. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be the opposite of that.
My Top 5 products for curly hair
After many years of trying pretty much every product for curly hair you can think of, I’ve finally narrowed my hair care regime down to 5 essential products.
I use my top 5 products for curly hair every day. Although number 2 is a once a week thing – more on that below. If you’ve got fine, curly hair these products might help you too.
1. NIOXIN SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
My hair is naturally very fine and my under active thyroid has a not so fabulous side effect of thinning it further. I stumbled across Nioxin several years ago and have been using it ever since. It’s quite pricey and so far I’ve found buying the large 1 litre bottles from strawberry net to be the cheapest option.
2. A WEEKLY CONDITIONING TREATMENT
Curly hair can become dry very quickly. I find using a weekly conditioning treatment while I’m in the shower works well on my fine curly locks. Not only does it condition the curl, leaving it lovely and soft, it’s also a quick and easy way to get the conditioning job done.
There are plenty of conditioning treatments available to choose from. NAK products work best on my fine, curly hair.
3. A TANGLE TEEZER AND WIDE TOOTHED COMB
A Tangle Teezer is fabulous for brushing curly hair. It gets rid of those pesky knots at the back of your hair in no time and does so without pulling or damaging your curls.
It’s also great to use on children’s hair of any type as it gets rid of the knots effortlessly and easily.
I use a wide toothed comb after I’ve brushed my hair. It helps separate the curl and keep the frizz factor low.
4. REDKEN FULL EFFECT MOUSSE
If Redken ever stop production of this product, I don’t know what I’ll do! It’s lightweight, making it perfect for fine hair, and doesn’t give your curly hair that dreaded crunchy look.
Redken Full Effect Mousse can be a tricky product to find. I purchase mine from Hairhouse Warehouse.
5. VOLUME POWDER
I add a good dose of volume powder to the top of my head once my hair is dry. This lifts my fine hair nicely and gives it the volume it so desperately needs.
There are hundreds of volume powders out there. I use Schwarzkpof Volume Powder which I fling into my trolley when doing the groceries.
