Quite often, when I’m chatting with friends about this blogging caper, they’ll ask me if I ever get people leaving nasty comments here or on the blog’s Facebook page. I’m happy to report that I haven’t had to deal with that side of things…yet!
Although lately I’ve had more than my fair share of rude people head my way in real life and their behaviour has left me asking, when did we all become so rude?
Take for instance the older lady behind me at my local IGA (a smaller, family owned supermarket, for those not sure what I’m talking about) on Monday. I had 1/2 a trolley full of items and when I rocked up to the checkout, I was the only person in line. The girl working on the register was doing her best to get the items through quickly, but unfortunately by the time she was about half way through, there was quite a queue forming behind me. She called for another staff member to come and assist and it was at that moment that the old duck behind me bowled up to her and said, “I’ve only got this ham. Here’s the $1.29 for it” before throwing the money on the counter.
The young girl took the rudeness in her stride, smiled politely and said, “I’m sorry but I need to scan it and I can’t do that until I’ve finished with this lady.”
And so the old bird stood right on top of me, with her ham in one hand while furiously tapping her fingers on the bench and sighing with such enthusiasm, I’m fairly sure people entering the store thought they might have been walking straight into *that* scene from When Harry Met Sally!
I mean, really. Who knew that $1.29 worth of ham was so important?! More important than the food in my trolley, obviously. And how hard is it to just wait your turn? Too bloody hard apparently!
Or how about the person who was parked in front of me yesterday and when leaving his/her parking spot, decided it was easier to reverse straight into the front of my car and drive off than it was to a) not actually hit my car or b) leave a note apologising and offer to fix the bumper bar? RUDE!
And don’t get me started on the kid in Sophie’s class who hurt Sophie’s feelings when she called her a “goodie two shoes” all because Sophie picked up something that belonged to someone else by mistake and wanted to give it back to them instead of just leaving it on the floor like her friend suggested. RUDE!
And then there’s the tradie who was meant to be at our house on Monday at 4pm, because that’s the time that HE SET with me the week before. Only he finished a job early on Monday, so he rang me and asked if could come over at 1pm instead. I told him I wasn’t home, so that wouldn’t be possible. He then threw quite the passive aggressive tanty and informed me he probably wouldn’t be able to get to my place at 4pm after all and was all booked out for the rest of the week, so how does next Monday at 3.30 sound? UM, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE BEING VERY RUDE!
Other things that have left me wondering when did we all become so rude include, but are not limited to, the bloke who owns the block of land next door and refuses to mow it and as a result snakes have decided the overgrown grass would be a fabulous place to live (RUDE!), people who visit your house for the first time and point out all the things they don’t like about it (RUDE!), drivers you let in front of you during peak hour and don’t wave to say thank you (RUDE!), people who work in fancy homewares stores and give you quite the once over when you walk in and then ignore you the entire time you’re in their shop (RUDE!) and finally, my personal favourite, people who ask you what you do all day now that you’re just a mum (SO RUDE, I CAN’T EVEN!)
On a positive note, because doom and gloom with a side serve of RUDE! isn’t usually welcome around here, I feel so much better now I’ve got that off my chest!
So how about you? Is there something or someone rude in your life? Feel free to share it with me. I promise it will make you feel instantly better and 5 kilos lighter! Ok, so I might have made that last bit up, but tell me anyway. I’m all ears x
