Something you might not know about me, is that I am a planner. Then again maybe you’ve worked that one out for yourself. Especially as I’ve blogged about my intense love of labels, lists and meal planning on more than one occasion.
When I come up with an idea, I spend a lot of time planning it. Thinking it through. Wondering what the worst case scenario will be. Then I might go ahead and move forward with the idea. Assuming that
a) I haven’t come up with an excuse to not go ahead with the idea (“I don’t have time” “Now isn’t the right time” “I’m too busy doing XYZ” “I’ll get to it next month” “I’ll put that on my to-do list” – do any of those sound familiar to you too?)
b) someone else hasn’t already taken that idea from me. Which, if you’ve read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic, is totally a thing that happens to people like myself ALL.THE.TIME.
Why You Should Just Do It
But what I’ve realised is that those excuses aren’t excuses at all.
It’s actually fear showing up as an excuse.
And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live a life that’s full of fear. I also don’t want to live a life where I’m always muttering the words, “But I thought of doing that MONTHS ago.”
Fear is the main reason it took me so long to plan an event. Readers of Kirsten and co. have been emailing and messaging me for well over a year, asking if I could organise a get together or a shopping day or even a styling workshop and yet I kept putting it off.
Now to be fair, last year I was a bit under the weather health wise. But this year I’m so much better and the only thing standing in my way was me!
So I got over myself, planned an event and in a few days Coffee With Kirsten is happening. The aim of the event is to raise money for The Pyjama Foundation and I’m going to make it a yearly thing.
Other ideas I also want to shove in fears face are:
- Styling Workshops {with a difference} They’re coming in 2017. Stay tuned.
- Taking Coffee With Kirsten to New Zealand.
- Organising a holiday on the Gold Coast with Kirsten and co. readers. I’ll take you to the best shopping, dining and pampering destinations the GC has to offer. Can you imagine how much FUN we would have?!
- Organising a blogger’s retreat. Not a conference, but a retreat where like-minded bloggers can come together for a long weekend of R&R and idea sharing.
- An e-book for blokes. Guns is going to write it and he’s going to show the men of the world that it is possible to teach yourself how to belt out a meal in under 20 minutes that doesn’t involve searching for a pizza voucher and the phone.
- Writing an actual book. It’ll be a self-help book that’s actually helpful. I’d love to call it How To Quit Kale {and other bullshit you don’t need in your life} but I don’t think I can go with a swear word on a book cover. Also, I probably should start writing a few chapters and possibly secure a publisher before I start worrying about things like the title #minordetail
What Are You Waiting For?
But enough about me. Let’s talk about you. When you can’t stop thinking about something you can, should and want to do, don’t let fear stand in your way. Don’t make excuses like I used to do. Life is too short to let it pass you by.
Facing fear is scary and exciting and overwhelming and amazing all rolled into one.
My advice? Make like Nike and Just DO IT!
