Hello, my name is Kirsten and if my Instagram feed is anything to go by, I’m a little bit addicted to stripes.
I think it’s because I’m such a jeans and a tee kind of girl and adding a stripe is the perfect basic. It looks polished but without a lot of fuss – except when you’re trying to photograph it. Then it looks quite fussy!
Now some people out there have this thing where they think they shouldn’t wear stripes for various reasons. Perhaps you’re one of those people?
Let’s take a moment to discuss those reasons, shall we?
“Stripes will make me look bigger than I am”
Maybe you think that because someone told you that once. Spoiler alert – that person was wrong!
Not so long ago I was carrying an extra 25 kilos around. I wore stripes then and not once did anyone ever say to me, “You look lovely, but if you ditched the striped tee you’d look roughly 4.9 kilos lighter.”
You’re perfect just the way you are right now to wear anything you like – stripes included.
“I’m too old to wear stripes…”
Ok, here’s my rule when it comes to age and wearing stripes – if you have a pulse, wear the stripes.
Age, like size, shouldn’t dictate what you wear. If you see a striped something and you like it, you should wear it.
“Stripes are a bit OTT for me”
Now this I get. For some people stripes can be a bit confronting, especially if you’re not used to wearing a lot of pattern or colour.
My advice? Ease your way into stripes with either a fine striped tee or some simple accessories. Coming into Spring/Summer there will be plenty of striped shoes, handbags, lightweight scarves and/or earrings or offer.
“I don’t know how to wear stripes”
I also get this one and it really is a case of trying on a few different styles until you hit the stripe jackpot.
Personally I avoid wearing really wide, bold stripes simply because I don’t like wearing them. I find myself drawn towards a thinner stripe so that’s what I stick to.
Basically the rule is – there are no rules! If you put on a piece of clothing and you feel great in it, then it should be yours. Don’t worry about all those old school rules and myths that ‘they’ bang on about. Who are ‘they’ anyway?
Life is far too short to be wearing clothes that make you feel miserable. There are plenty of other things and people in the world who can make you feel a bit crap – let’s not add clothes to the list too.
